In 1964, Liberia was divided into five ( 5) political sub-divisions an enactment with the creation of four (4) others counties, Grand Gedeh, Nimba, Bong and Lofa. Prior to the fifteen years civil war in Liberia, Grand Gedeh County was the second largest county in area.
Zwedru, a name for the head of an Anteater creek, is the county’s political headquarters. Major towns in Grand Gedeh include Ziah Town, Toe town, Zleh’s town, Tuzon, Putu-Penukin, Gbolakin, Jaranzon, Jawondee, Bargblor’s Town, Zayee’s Town Dougee’s Town etc.
Prior to the war Grand Gedeh County has five (5) Districts: Tchien, Konobo, Gbarzon, Wahbo and Gbepeo. Currently with the creation of River Gee county, Grand Gedeh county left with three (3) Districts; Tchien, Konobo and Gbarzon

Grand Gedeh County is the home of the first indigenous president of our country the Republic of Liberia.
